Taking a trip around the world might be something you’ve always dreamt of doing. Maybe, you’ve already traveled extensively and can’t wait to get back out on the road. Either way, you will need to save money for your travel goals.

If you’re comfortably employed, stick with your job and put some money aside each month. If you’re unemployed or looking for more lucrative work, you’re in luck. There are countless ways to earn money towards your travel fund.

The best jobs for saving money for traveling are the ones you can take with you, so when you’re halfway around the globe and your travel funds are dwindling, you can find a job doing the same work. Three great ways to earn money at home and overseas are bartending and waiting tables, teaching English and working as an au pair.

Bartending and Waiting Tables

Restaurant work is fast paced and requires long hours that can stretch way past midnight. From a positive perspective, bartending and waiting tables is a very social job where you can make great friends and get to try amazing food and wine for free.

What’s more, in these positions you will be able to save a lot of money quickly, often going home each night with a pocketful of cash. At the end of each shift, you will be one step closer to your extended vacation.

Fortunately, you can take your hospitality skills with you. You could work in one of the dining rooms or bars on a cruise ship and get to see more of the world when the ship makes port in the Caribbean or Greek Isles. Another way to combine restaurant work with travelling is by working in a resort. Spend the summer at a remote lodge in Alaska or in a Tahitian paradise. In between gigs, get back to just enjoying yourself.

Save Money at Home

There are many ways to save money at home such as drinking from the tap rather than buying plastic water bottles, eating in the house instead of at a restaurant or even switching over to solar in order to save on the electric bill. Do a review of solar companies to find your best options and save as much money in order to go on that next trip!

Teaching English

Another great way to save money for a round the world trip is by teaching English. There are several online-based English language learning companies that hire native English speakers to teach children overseas. Most of them do require a bachelor’s degree, but other than that, these companies want smiling, enthusiastic and engaging teachers who can manage an online classroom.

The largest market for online English lessons is China, so teachers have to be willing to work according to China’s time zones. For the East Coast of the United States, this translates into working very early in the morning. You’ll be assessed by the students, and the better you score, the more work you will get.

You can also work with individuals through websites like italki. On this website you can set your own rates and if you attract some regular clients, you can save more money for traveling.

Don’t forget that you can take your teaching skills with you. Many travelers keep their jobs and clients and continue to work online with a tablet or on their phone while backpacking through places like Thailand and Vietnam where costs are low but the fun ratio is high.

Finding work at a language school is also possible, although in addition to a bachelor’s degree, you will need to get certified. Like everything else these days, you can get certified online.

Working as an Au Pair

Work as an au pair to start your international adventure immediately. Au pairs are more than just babysitters. They are an integral part of a family. In exchange for forty-five hours of work per week, you will receive free room and board and at least approximately $800.00 per month, so you can definitely save money for traveling.

The bonus is that you’ll most likely already be traveling! Opportunities exist in Europe, Asia and South America. For US citizens to qualify as an au pair, you must be between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, be single without children and have a clean criminal record.

Adventure awaits. Take your hard-earned travel dollars and see the world!
