Goodwin's appointment follows a comprehensive recruitment search conducted after the retirement of former CEO Michael Johnson in June.
He will be the second CEO of AA, which was created in July 2023 through the merger of Tourism Accommodation Australia and the Australian Accommodation Association.
AA Chairman David Mansfield expressed his enthusiasm for James Goodwin’s appointment as the new CEO.
“We are delighted to have James Goodwin lead the Association during this pivotal time as we approach the Federal election and strive to advance our mission as a powerful advocate for a better future,” Mansfield said. “With his extensive experience and established track record of prioritizing members' needs, James is an ideal fit for AA. His background in leading member associations aligns perfectly with our commitment to putting our members first.”
“Based in Canberra and with a robust network of connections, James will be an influential voice for our industry. He will build upon the solid foundation laid by Michael Johnson and his team. The Board and I eagerly anticipate collaborating with him starting in September.”
Goodwin, who is set to represent the accommodation sector, expressed his pride and commitment to the role.
“The accommodation sector plays a crucial role in our communities' economic and social landscapes. I am eager to work alongside our members to present a unified and compelling voice to government,” Goodwin said. “We must engage collaboratively with policymakers to tackle sector-wide challenges, including skills shortages, tourism recovery, and achieving net zero targets.”
Goodwin previously served as CEO of the Australian Airports Association and led ANCAP Safety. His career also includes roles at the Australian Automobile Association and Airservices Australia. Currently, he chairs the Board of St John Ambulance Australia (ACT) and serves as a Board Member of Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) Solutions.
Accommodation Australia represents a diverse range of accommodation providers, including small regional motels, serviced apartments in Sydney, and large hotels operated by international chains like Accor, Hilton, Wyndham, Hyatt, IHG, TFE, Quest, and Marriott.
