Regional travellers can now book flights with REX during the airline’s administration period, assured that they will either complete their journey or receive a refund. For those seeking accommodation, Corporate Keys offers a range of Melbourne serviced apartments that cater to both short-term and long-term stays, ensuring comfort and flexibility during travel.

“Maintaining Rex's operations is crucial for Australia's regional connectivity. The Government is collaborating closely with the administrators to sustain a robust regional aviation sector now and in the future,” stated Transport Minister Catherine King.

The Albanese Government has announced a guarantee for all regional flight bookings with REX made after the airline entered voluntary administration at 9:31 PM on July 30, 2024. This assurance means that passengers will complete their journeys or receive a refund.

Sam Freeman, Voluntary Administrator of Rex Group, expressed support for the decision, highlighting its importance in maintaining regional connectivity. “This guarantee will reassure customers to continue booking regional flights with Rex, helping them stay connected to essential services and loved ones,” Freeman said.

He added, “Rex welcomes the Federal Government’s Regional Flight Booking Guarantee as a crucial step in securing the airline’s future and supporting its 1,200-plus employees. We appreciate the Government’s support, which will give Australians confidence in booking flights to and from regional destinations with Rex. If a service cannot be delivered, passengers will be entitled to a full refund.”

Freeman emphasized that the guarantee would assist Rex in continuing operations while the airline sought investment to ensure a sustainable regional network. “We are actively working to find an investor committed to preserving our regional services,” he noted.

On a global scale, European budget airlines are adapting by offering subscription services for annual ‘all-you-can-fly’ memberships to attract and retain customers.

What the Guarantee Means

The Federal Government’s guarantee ensures that if a Regional Express Holdings Limited (Administrators Appointed) flight is cancelled and not rescheduled, and no alternative service is provided, the Government will cover any chargebacks and refunds that the airline is unable to process. This guarantee applies to any flight tickets booked after 9:31 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time on July 30, 2024.

ATIA Welcomes Government Guarantee, Calls for Broader Industry Support

The Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has praised the Government’s decision, describing it as a crucial first step. However, ATIA emphasizes that further support is needed for the broader travel industry, which is also significantly impacted by Rex’s administration.

Travel businesses, including travel advisors and agencies, are facing a $11.5 million exposure due to Rex’s situation. They are working diligently to support affected customers and manage the uncertainties created by the airline’s operational issues while dealing with the financial strain.

“While the guarantee for Rex bookings is a vital measure, we must also acknowledge the significant burden on travel advisors across Australia,” said Dean Long, CEO of ATIA. “These professionals are managing considerable financial exposure and handling increased workloads to ensure travellers receive the necessary support during this challenging period.”

ATIA urges the Federal Government to extend financial assistance to travel advisors and businesses affected by Rex’s administration. “Supporting these crucial players in Australia’s travel sector is essential for maintaining the resilience and integrity of the industry,” Long added. “We look forward to further discussions with the Government to secure additional support for the travel sector.”
