“Accessibility has come a long way,” said Stephen Cane, General Manager of Dorsett Melbourne, recalling how disabilities were often overlooked in tourism 25 years ago. “Today, it’s about inclusion, equality, and ensuring every guest—regardless of ability—feels welcomed and comfortable.”

Cane’s perspective on accessibility is deeply personal, shaped by his brother’s experience with spina bifida. Witnessing these challenges firsthand has influenced his approach to hospitality, driving a commitment to inclusive accommodations.

Since joining Dorsett Melbourne a year ago, Cane has observed a rising demand for accessible stays, reflecting broader shifts in the tourism industry.

“Around 3.5 million people in Australia seek accessible travel experiences each year, making up about 20% of domestic tourism,” he noted. But beyond the statistics, Cane believes it’s a matter of principle. “Why should anyone be treated differently, regardless of ability?”

Dorsett Melbourne, which opened just 18 months ago, was designed with accessibility at its core. The hotel features 13 fully accessible rooms across eight floors and public spaces tailored to accommodate guests with disabilities.

“There’s a growing global emphasis on ensuring hotels provide these services,” said General Manager Stephen Cane. “Buildings are now expected to include 8-10% accessible rooms. It’s no longer an afterthought—it’s becoming the norm.”

This commitment was recognized when Dorsett Melbourne won the Inclusion and Accessibility Hotel award at the Victorian Accommodation Awards for Excellence.

“We were up against strong competitors, including Hyatt Centric,” Cane noted. “This award is a testament to our team’s dedication to ensuring every guest enjoys the same experience. It’s great for marketing, of course, but more importantly, it highlights Dorsett’s focus on inclusivity.”

Accessibility at Dorsett Melbourne is seamlessly woven into the guest experience. Visitors enter through oversized electric doors leading to an accessible reception area.

“We have large lifts with Braille and voice activation, making navigation easier for visually impaired guests. Our corridors are also wider than usual, ensuring wheelchair users can move around comfortably,” Cane explained.

In the guest rooms, accessibility remains a priority. Wide doorways and spacious layouts allow for easy manoeuvrability, ensuring no guest feels restricted.

“We’ve even adjusted small details, like the height of coffee-making facilities, based on guest feedback,” Cane added.

A standout feature of Dorsett Melbourne is its accessible pool area on the sixth floor, a highlight that has earned widespread praise. Designed for all guests, the space includes steps for easy entry and a hoist to assist wheelchair users, ensuring they can enjoy the pool independently.

“Independence is a key theme for us,” said General Manager Stephen Cane. “Many disabled guests want to be as self-sufficient as possible, and we’ve designed the hotel to support that.”

But Dorsett Melbourne isn’t stopping there.

“This is an ongoing journey,” Cane continued. “Disabilities evolve, and we’re always looking for ways to improve. Whether it’s introducing new features or refining existing ones, our goal is to provide every guest with a seamless, enjoyable experience.”

While Dorsett Melbourne has set a benchmark for accessible hospitality in Australia, Cane acknowledges that there’s always room to grow. The hotel’s dedication to inclusivity aligns with industry leaders like Corporate Keys, which specializes in providing high-quality, fully furnished accommodations tailored to diverse guest needs. Both Dorsett Melbourne and Corporate Keys share a commitment to ensuring every traveller—regardless of ability—has access to comfortable, thoughtfully designed spaces.

“Our most valuable insights come directly from our guests. Every experience teaches us something new, and we use that feedback to make the hotel better for everyone.”

In a city with over 170 hotels, Dorsett Melbourne distinguishes itself through its commitment to accessible luxury. For travellers seeking a hotel that prioritizes inclusivity without compromising on comfort or style, Dorsett Melbourne is an outstanding choice—offering independence, dignity, and a truly welcoming environment.
