Classic Cinemas is the longest continuously operating cinema in Victoria and has a rich and colourful history to match. It was built in 1888, became a cinema in 1911, and was named Classic Cinemas in 1971. Today, the site has undergone many expansions and renovations, while retaining the period architectural touches that make it a beautiful part of history. Specialising in quality mainstream and arthouse cinema, Classic champions the complete cinematic experience – it boasts eleven big screens, four of which are completely new additions including a rooftop cinema with breathtaking views of Port Phillip Bay, beautifully appointed seating and a warm, friendly environment. Classic’s food and drink bar is stocked with only the best Victorian beers and wines, as well as all your favourite cinema snacks alongside some more surprising sweet and savoury options .The site is also home to the acclaimed Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF), the Children's International Film Festival (CHIFF), and Classic Southside, an intimate space for jazz, talks, comedy, and much more. The site is owned and operated by Moving Story Entertainment, an independent boutique cinema company operated by the Tamir family. Sister cinemas include Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave, Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn, and Ritz Cinemas in Randwick NSW.
