A showcase of 'Art Quilts' can now be seen on display at the National Wool Museum as Art Quilt Australia returns to Geelong.
Art Quilt Australia is a biennial juried exhibition/competition open to textile artists resident in Australia and New Zealand and OzQuilt Network (OZQN) members worldwide.
The competition seeks to promote excellence and innovation in contemporary art quilts in Australia, with over $6000 in prizes - including:
$3000 for Expressions: The Wool Quilt Prize, for a wool quilt. The winner of the Expressions prize is also acquired by the National Wool Museum for its permanent collection.
$3000 for the non-acquisitive OZQN Award of Excellence, which is open to all quilts.
$500 awards for Highly Commended in both categories.
So what is an Art Quilt? An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a 'pattern'. Art Quilts experiment with textile manipulation, color, texture and/or a diversity of mixed media.
